'Everyone gather round,' said Snape, his black eyes glittering, 'and watch what happens to Longbottom's toad. If he has managed to produce a Shrinking Solution, it will shrink to a tadpole. If, as I don't doubt, he has done it wrong, his toad is likely to be poisoned.'

Piton nel terzo libro raggiunge il culmine della bastardaggine. Non è da scartare l'ipotesi che avesse già pronto un antidoto per salvare il rospo di Paciock, ma il gesto è comunque terribile.

"E' la seconda volta che parli non richiesta, signorina Granger" disse tranquillamente Piton. "Altri cinque punti in meno ai Grifondoro, per essere un'insopportabile sotutto".

'That is the second time you have spoken out of turn, Miss Granger,' said Snape coolly. 'Five more points from Gryffindor for being an insufferable know-it-all.'

Anche in questo caso Piton si rende decisamente antipatico, ma Hermione nei primi libri è davvero insopportabile!

"Che cosa ci faceva la tua testa a Hogsmeade, Potter?" disse Piton piano. "La tua testa non ha il permesso di andare a Hogsmeade. Nessuna parte del tuo corpo ha il permesso di andare a Hogsmeade".

'What would your head have been doing in Hogsmeade, Potter?' said Snape softly. 'Your head is not allowed in Hogsmeade. No part of your body has permission to be in Hogsmeade.'

"Allora" disse rialzandosi. "Tutti, dal Ministero della Magia in giù, stanno cercando di tenere il celebre Harry Potter alla larga da Sirius Black. Ma il celebre Harry Potter detta legge. Che sia la gente comune a preoccuparsi della sua sicurezza! Il celebre Harry Potter va dove vuole, senza pensare alle conseguenze".

'So,' he said, straightening up again. 'Everyone from the Minister for Magic downwards has been trying to keep famous Harry Potter safe from Sirius Black. But famous Harry Potter is a law unto himself. Let the ordinary people worry about his safety! Famous Harry Potter goes where he wants to, with no thought for the consequences.'

La verità detta da Piton fa storcere il naso, ma se le stesse cose le avesse dette con un altro tono un personaggio più amato come Lupin, per Harry e i lettori avrebbero avuto un peso diverso.
Fino al quinto libro Harry ha infatti sistematicamente infranto le regole senza rendersi conto che i suoi atti avrebbero potuto fare del male a sé stesso e agli altri.

"Sapessi quanto assomigli a tuo padre, Potter" disse Piton all'improvviso, con un bagliore negli occhi. "Anche lui era straordinariamente arrogante. Quel suo po' di talento a Quidditch gli dava la certezza di essere superiore agli altri. Come te. Andava in giro a pavoneggiarsi con i suoi amici e ammiratori... la somiglianza fra voi due è straordinaria".

'How extraordinarily like your father you are, Potter,' Snape said suddenly, his eyes glinting. 'He, too, was exceedingly arrogant. A small amount of talent on the Quidditch pitch made him think he was a cut above the rest of us, too. Strutting around the place with his friends and admirers ... the resemblance between you is uncanny.'

Piton sbaglia a ritenere Harry uguale a suo padre. Lui non gioisce nell'essere al centro dell'attenzione ma vi ci si trova spesso suo malgrado.

"Mi dispiacerebbe che tu ti facessi un'idea sbagliata di tuo padre, Potter" disse, mentre un ghigno orribile gli deformava la faccia. "Hai forse immaginato un atto di glorioso eroismo? Allora lascia che ti corregga. Il tuo santissimo padre e i suoi amici hanno fatto uno scherzo davvero spiritoso che si sarebbe concluso con la mia morte se tuo padre all'ultimo momento non avesse avuto paura. Non ci fu niente di coraggioso in quello che fece. Fu solo per salvare la sua pelle quanto la mia. Se lo scherzo fosse riuscito, sarebbe stato espulso da Hogwarts".

'I would hate you to run away with a false idea of your father, Potter,' he said, a terrible grin twisting his face. 'Have you been imagining some act of glorious heroism? Then let me correct you - your saintly father and his friends played a highly amusing joke on me that would have resulted in my death if your father hadn't got cold feet at the last moment. There was nothing brave about what he did. He was saving his own skin as much as mine. Had their joke succeeded, he would have been expelled from Hogwarts.'

Il giudizio negativo su James Potter sembra eccessivo perché dato da Piton, ma i fatti narrati nel quinto libro hanno dimostrato che per quanto sia sgradevole, Piton è sincero.

"Il signor Lunastorta porge i suoi ossequi al professor Piton e lo prega di tenere il suo naso mostruosamente lungo lontano dagli affari altrui".
"Il signor Ramoso è d'accordo con il signor Lunastorta, e ci tiene ad aggiungere che il professor Piton è un brutto idiota".
"Il signor Felpato vorrebbe sottolineare il suo stupore per il fatto che un tale imbecille sia diventato professore".
"Il signor Codaliscia augura buona giornata al professor Piton, e gli dà un consiglio: lavati i capelli, sporcaccione".

'Mr Moony presents his compliments to Professor Snape, and begs him to keep his abnormally large nose out of other people's business.'
'Mr Prongs agrees with Mr Moony, and would like to add that Professor Snape is an ugly git.'
'Mr Padfoot would like to register his astonishment that an idiot like that ever became a Professor.'
'Mr Wormtail bids Professor Snape good day, and advises him to wash his hair, the slimeball.'

"Altri due criminali pronti per Azkaban questa notte" disse Piton con gli occhi febbrili. "Sono curioso di vedere come la prenderà Silente... Era convinto che tu fossi innocuo, sai, Lupin... Un Lupo Mannaro addomesticato..."

'Two more for Azkaban tonight,' said Snape, his eyes now gleaming fanatically. 'I shall be interested to see how Dumbledore takes this ... he was quite convinced you were harmless, you know, Lupin ... a tame werewolf ...'

Piton è letteralmente accecato dall'odio in questo capitolo ed il suo comportamento è ottimamente descritto.
Lupin è talmente gentile che è impossibile non simpatizzare per lui, ma dopo aver scoperto che si è dimenticato di bere la pozione, anche le pesanti accuse di Piton non appaiono infondate.

"Dammi solo una scusa" sussurrò. "Dammi solo una scusa per farlo, e giuro che lo farò".

'Give me a reason,' he whispered. 'Give me a reason to do it, and I swear I will.'

"La vendetta è dolcissima" sibilò Piton a Black. "Quanto ho sperato di essere io a catturarti..."

'Vengeance is very sweet,' Snape breathed at Black. 'How I hoped I would be the one to catch you ...'

Questa frase e quella sopra rendono perfettamente l'odio che Piton nutre nei confronti di Sirius Black.
Non solo non riesce a prendere in considerazione l'ipotesi che possa trattarsi di un errore, ma è anche pronto ad ucciderlo pur di ottenere vendetta.

"Al castello?" Disse Piton suadente. "Non credo che dovremo andare così in là. Non devo far altro che chiamare i Dissennatori, una volta usciti dal Platano. Saranno felicissimi di vederti, Black... Così felici che ti daranno un bacetto, credo..."

'Up to the castle?' said Snape silkily. 'I don't think we need to go that far. All I have to do is call the Dementors once we get out of the Willow. They'll be very pleased to see you, Black ... pleased enough to give you a little kiss, I daresay ...'

Nota alla traduzione: il famoso Platano Picchiatore in realtà è un salice (willow). Non si è mai capito perché in italiano si sia deciso di cambiare pianta, forse è stato solo un errore. Peccato che nella versione cinematografica sia lampante che quello che si vede non è un platano!

"LEI E' PATETICO!" gridò Harry. "SOLO PERCHE' A SCUOLA LA PRENDEVANO IN GIRO NON HA NEMMENO INTENZIONE DI ASCOLTARE..."
"SILENZIO! NON PERMETTO CHE MI SI PARLI CON QUESTO TONO!" strillò Piton, più folle che mai. "Tale padre tale figlio, Potter! Ti ho appena salvato la vita, dovresti ringraziarmi in ginocchio! Ti sarebbe stato proprio bene se ti avesse ucciso! Saresti morto come tuo padre, sei troppo arrogante per credere che potresti esserti sbagliato sul conto di Black... Ora fuori dai piedi, o ti ci spedirò io... FUORI DAI PIEDI, POTTER!"

'YOU'RE PATHETIC!' Harry yelled. 'JUST BECAUSE THEY MADE A FOOL OF YOU AT SCHOOL YOU WON'T EVEN LISTEN -'
'SILENCE! I WILL NOT BE SPOKEN TO LIKE THAT!' Snape shrieked, looking madder than ever. 'Like father, like son, Potter! I have just saved your neck, you should be thanking me on bended knee! You would have been well served if he'd killed you! You'd have died like your father, too arrogant to believe you might be mistaken in Black - now get out of the way, or I will make you. GET OUT OF THE WAY, POTTER!'

Harry, come sempre, dimostra la sensibilità di un cubo di marmo e nel tentativo di convincerlo non fa che peggiorare le cose. Piton è stato sbeffeggiato troppo a lungo per sopportare che uno studente gli manchi di rispetto.
Nonostante la situazione drammatica e lo stato alteratissimo di Piton, vale la pena sottolineare come si limiti a minacciare senza usare mai la violenza con i ragazzi. Piton è davvero convinto di agire anche nel loro interesse.
